Vein Removal Q & A

SKIN & LASER AESTHETICS

What are varicose veins, and how can I tell if I have them?

While varicose veins can appear anywhere on the body, they are most common — and commonly most painful — in the legs. Normal veins are smooth and relatively straight pathways. A varicose vein is a vein that has become enlarged and gnarled. Usually, varicose veins make themselves visually apparent. Individuals can identify them by looking for:

  • Veins that appear to bulge out of the legs
  • Veins that look darker than normal and have a purple or blue hue
  • Veins that look thick and cordlike

While you can usually spot varicose veins, physical symptoms may also call your attention to them. Some of those symptoms include:

  • Pain after sitting or standing for extended periods of time
  • Aching, heavy-feeling legs
  • Muscle cramping or swelling in the legs
  • Itchy veins
  • Color changes in the vein or reddening of the skin around a vein

More serious varicose veins could be indicative of a vascular problem. You are encouraged to see a health care professional if you experience pain as a result of varicose veins.

Because varicose veins can be cosmetically inconvenient and painful, SKIN & LASER AESTHETICS offers vein removal.

What are spider veins?

Spider veins are a mild variation of varicose veins. They usually look like darkened, purplish or red spider webs on the skin’s surface. While they are most common in the legs, they can also occur on the face. Spider veins can be a cosmetic annoyance but are not usually indicative of any health problems. Even so, vein removal is an option.

What are my vein removal options?

Laser vein removal is a treatment option for patients with spider veins and small varicose veins. During the laser treatment, a laser light is directed at the vein. Small spider veins may disappear immediately after treatment. Larger spider veins and varicose veins will darken, and you’ll likely see them for 1 to 3 months before they disappear.

Sclerotherapy is a treatment option for patients with varicose veins that are causing physical pain or are unwanted for cosmetic reasons. For your convenience, this quick procedure can be performed right in the office at SKIN & LASER AESTHETICS. It does not require anesthesia and you can continue on with your day after the treatment.

During sclerotherapy vein removal, the team at SKIN & LASER AESTHETICS injects varicose veins with a solution that irritates the inside of the vein, scarring it and ultimately causing it to close so that the body will reroute blood to other, healthy veins. Within a few weeks, you see varicose veins shrink and fade.

Aftercare for this vein removal procedure is very simple. You will need to wear compression stockings for two weeks after the procedure and are encouraged to stay active to prevent clotting. Beyond that, the body will stop using that damaged vein on its own. Spider veins usually disappear in 3 to 6 weeks. Varicose veins take 3 to 4 months.
